food.
Bacteria require energy and material
for growth and reproduction.
Energy for bacteria is derived from bio-
chemical oxidation or reduction of
inorganic or organic compounds.
Material is derived from inorganic and
organic compounds.
Bacteria are classified according to the
energy or material source they require.
Autotrophs:
They derive both enough
energy and material from inorganic
substance.
Heterotrophs :
They derive both energy
and material from organic compounds.
Phototrophs :
Utilise sunlight as energy
source and inorganic substances for
material sources.
Heterotrophic bacteria are the most
important species in the degradation of
organic matter.
Aerobic hetrotrophs:
Aerobic bacteria (normally called) utilizes organics in the presences of oxygen.
Anaerobic hetrotrophs:
Anaerobic bacteria utilizes organic in the absence of oxygen.
