The purpose of using reinforced cement concrete (RCC) is to enhance the tensile strength of concrete structures. Plain cement concrete has significantly low tensile strength, typically around one-tenth of its compressive strength. This means that concrete beams made solely of plain concrete would fail abruptly as soon as tension cracks begin to develop.

To overcome this limitation, reinforcement is introduced into the concrete. The reinforcement, typically in the form of steel bars or mesh, is added to carry the tensile stress that develops within the structure. By combining the high compressive strength of concrete with the high tensile strength of steel, RCC can effectively handle both compressive and tensile forces, making it suitable for a wide range of structural applications.

The use of reinforcement in RCC not only increases its overall strength but also helps in mitigating the effects of temperature changes and shrinkage.
