What are the different components of the stairs and their functions?

Different components of the stairs and their functions are as follows:-

In this article, I discussed the different components of stairs and their functions in detail.

Name

Descriptions

Baluster

A baluster, also known as a spindle or stair stick, is a vertical post that supports the handrail of a staircase. Balusters are typically evenly spaced along the length of the staircase to provide safety and prevent falls.

Flight

A flight refers to a continuous series of steps that connect two landings. It is the section of the staircase between two floors or platforms.

Going

The going refers to the horizontal depth or length of a step.

It is measured from the nosing (front edge) of one step to the nosing of the next step.

The going determines the amount of surface area available for stepping on each individual step.

Landing:

A landing is a flat platform or area in a staircase that provides a resting point between two flights.

It is typically located at the top or bottom of a flight, as well as at intermediate levels to change the direction of the stairs.

Rise

The rise refers to the vertical height between two consecutive steps.

It is measured from the top of one step to the top of the next step.

The rise determines the overall height of the staircase.

Riser

The riser is the vertical component of a step that connects the tread (horizontal surface) of one step to the tread of the next step.

It provides the vertical height between two steps.

The riser helps create a consistent and safe stair geometry.

Soffit

The soffit refers to the underside or bottom surface of a staircase. It can be the underside of a flight, landing, or the area beneath an overhanging structure, such as the bottom surface of an open staircase.

Step

A step is an individual horizontal surface that is used for stepping while ascending or descending a staircase.

It consists of a tread and a riser, providing a safe and comfortable surface for foot placement.

Tread

The tread is the horizontal component of a step that provides the surface for stepping.

It is the part of the step where the foot is placed.

The tread depth or going, as mentioned earlier, determines the available space for stepping.
