What are the functions of transverse reinforcement in the column?

The purpose of providing traverse reinforcement in the Reinforced column are as follows.

In this article, I discussed the purposes of providing the transverse reinforcement in columns.

  1. To stop the longitudinal reinforcement from buckling.
  2. To withstand the transverse shear induced by a moment or a transverse force that causes diagonal tension.
  3. To keep the longitudinal reinforcement in place during the concrete pour.
  4. To contain the concrete and stop it from splitting longitudinally.
  5. To provide the column ductility.
  6. To stop the column from suddenly failing due to brittleness.
